Lawrence LeShan, in his book “Cancer as a Turning Point,” called cancer despair manifested on a cellular level. I agree.
When I was diagnosed years ago, I had been so miserable for so long that I was almost relieved — for about a minute. It was a way out. But of course, then I read LeShan’s book, and my outlook changed.
His book really is all about making cancer into a turning point in life — a turning point for the better. And he explained it like this:
If you want your immune system to go to bat for you, you must convince it that you really do want to be alive. Hey, you need a reason to live. You need to jump out of bed in the morning in anticipation of all the wonderful stuff the day will bring.
If the thought of that makes you gag, you’ve got work to do. I did. And I did the work. And, well, let’s just say, I’m still here.
Besides, I realized there was a real win-win: Whether it worked or not, I’d have a much better time in the meantime. But still, I do totally believe in mind-body medicine and that it does work.
